Senior Director of Residential Services
I. Job Summary
The Senior Director of Residential Services (SDORS) is responsible for leading and supporting MCHS's residential treatment in service to clients and families, and in alignment with the organization's mission, vision and core values. The SDORS is responsible for cultivating a healthy workplace environment by leading with cultural sensitivity and awareness and ensuring that the program environments and staff teams are trauma informed, culturally diverse, competent, and inclusive. The SDORS will foster teamwork and a fully integrated service delivery model across all program areas related to residential treatment, including residential care, clinical services, and children services. The SDORS will focus on maximizing efficiency and program impact, enhance relationships with all stakeholders, and delivery evidence-based care and treatment that maximizes client outcomes.
II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Ensure that the mission, goals and operations of MCHS’s residential treatment program is consistently aligned with MCHS’s mission, goals, and strategy and best practices in the industry.
- Provide supervision and leadership of programs and services related to residential care, clinical services, children services (aftercare, medical, recreation, and education). Provide direction on work priorities, oversight of department growth, and support performance improvement processes. Enhance an internal collaborative culture that supports innovation, expansion and modernization of residential treatment services.
- Lead efforts to enhance residential operations including direct service interventions, integration of residential treatment team approaches and alignment with best practices in child welfare, residential care, behavioral health, and trauma informed treatment.
- Responsible for the development and execution of the agency’s trauma-informed care model.
- Identify new opportunities to support program growth, strengthening existing partnerships, and development of new partnerships that support program growth.
- Provide leadership in the planning, developing and the continual process improvement of residential treatment procedures and systems. Cultivate and support a culture of continuous program quality improvement by participating in and promoting department wide PQI initiatives, and working in partnership with quality and program directors to ensure quality standards are met or exceeded, including utilizing evidenced based, best practice standards to improve outcomes for our youth.
- Function as the agency liaison for external agencies to provide leadership to department programs to ensure effectiveness and compliance with policy, licensing, and accreditation requirements to ensure program success. This includes monitoring licensing and contractual corrective action plans.
- Ensure trauma informed programming occurs with a focus on creating a safe and supportive environment for staff and those served through knowledge, sensitivity, respect and a focus on resilience and recovery. This includes leading efforts to increase competency of program teams in the areas of therapeutic interventions and trauma informed care while ensuring appropriate training and onboarding of staff members responsible for program delivery and implementation.
- Assists in the preparation of the departments' annual budget process and ongoing management of revenue allocation to maintain service delivery.
- Develop departmental structures and processes to hold staff accountable to best practice standards for the program by the agency policies and procedures.
- Oversee and participate in Administrative On-Call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support to members of the residential treatment team.
- Operate within the guidelines of all agency policies and procedures and DHHS policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHS’s mission and vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer
III. Basic Competencies
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW), Counseling, or a related discipline where 50% of the course credits earned toward the degree are in human behavior sciences.
- Five (5) years’ experience as a supervisor in a residential or inpatient setting working with serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk youth between the ages of 5 – 18.
Knowledge Requirements:
- Computer and software applications (Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position;
- The behavior patterns of youth and methods of modifying behavior;
- Knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed care;
- Strategies related to program development and management and ability to execute;
- Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) policies and procedures and trends in child welfare; and
- Family, child and group dynamics.

- Maintain a Michigan driver’s license and driving record that allows the operation of an agency or personal vehicle for agency business or to transport clients as needed.
- Work flexible hours, when needed, which may include some evenings and weekends.
