JOB SUMMARY

The Special Education Teacher for the Summer School program facilitates a flexible education program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction to children in the residential department at MCHS. The teacher is responsible for collaborating with other certified staff and other departments to implement supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports so that the students benefit from the summer school curriculum to the greatest extent possible. The teacher is responsible for facilitating lesson plans and enrichment activities, providing instruction, and structuring the classroom.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Special Education Teacher must be able to do the following always:

  • Implement individualized and group educational programs and lesson plans based on child’s needs.
  • Enrich the educational program through field trips to community locations and through community member visits. 
  • Engage students in varied experiences that meet diverse needs and promote social, emotional, and academic growth. 
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on students and activities.
  • Establish, implement, and enforce rules and procedures for appropriate classroom behavior to maintain a positive learning environment. 
  • Implement effective individualized behavior management strategies and curriculum accommodations. 

BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience:         

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • State of Michigan Teacher’s Certification in any area of Special Education, required.  Emotional or Cognitive Impairment certification preferred.
  • Experience working with serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk youth males between the ages of 6 – 18 preferred.

The Knowledge of:

  • State high school and grade school content expectations (HSCE and GLCE)
  • Methods for providing differentiated instruction to at-risk children.
  • Student assessment strategies.

The Skills and Ability to:

  • Effectively provide instruction for serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk children.
  • Design, plan, and implement lesson plans for individuals and small groups of children.
  • Evaluate and document children’s response progress towards goals.
  • Utilize established assessment systems and educational programs (Reading A-Z, Read About, etc.)
