Methodist Children's Home Society is looking for a dedicated Occupational Therapist for our Residential Program. This position provides for the physical and psychological needs of emotionally disturbed youth and adolescent clients in our campus residential program. Our primary focus is children who have been subjected to physical, psychological, and sexual abuse or who have been severely neglected.

JOB SUMMARY

The Occupational Therapist is responsible for developing life skills plans for individual clients and providing progressive independent living skills training, both on and off campus, and support to young people placed in Independent Living programs at MCHS.  The Occupational Therapist will work directly with staff and Residents to reinforce skills that have been taught.  The Occupational Therapist is responsible for developing and participating in sensory processing therapy sessions, sensory diets and sensory room activities along with implementing individual sessions. 

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Evaluate the youth who are 14 years or older using the Ansell-Casey Life Skills Assessment (ACLSA) to determine the independent living skills that need to address with each youth in the ILP and Residential programs.
  • Provide Individual OT sensory assessments and provide necessary therapeutic services and/or for those children/adolescents who requirement it. 
  • Prepare teaching material for independent living training sessions for direct care staff to use with each youth.
  • Provide emotional and practical support, advocacy and specific information to the youth in the program to meet their needs for preparation for living in a community setting. 
  • Conduct all independent living skills training in groups and individually for the ILP and Residential Programs. 
  • Engage the youth in programing and services such as the Nation Youth in Transition Database (NYTD) and the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative (MYOI).
  • Provide opportunities for the youth to practice learned skills in collaboration with Recreational Therapist, Mentors and/or Youth Specialists.
  • Coordinate employment and educational services through opportunities that include job readiness training and high school completion programs as indicated for ILP and Residential Programs.
  • Provide a minimum of 4 hours per week of independent living instruction upon completion of the ACLSA (Ansel Casey Life Skills Assessment) and Independent Living Plan agreement.  75% of the Independent Living instruction time must be practical hands on instruction as opposed to worksheet, classroom or on-line instruction.  In addition, 10% must be community based for youth in the ILP Program. 
  • Included in #3Coordinate training programs with other programs with which clients are involved (sensory, college groups, outside sources for residents).
  • Maintain any and all written records regarding the client including hours spent with each child/progress notes. 
  • Maintain clear, consistent communication with supervisor, therapists, direct care staff and attend all necessary meetings and trainings as indicated by your supervisor.
  • Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook, program Operation Manual and agency policies and procedures. 

BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, and
  • Possession of a current OT license recognized by the State of Michigan, required.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience working with serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk youth males between the ages of 14 – 19, preferred.

The Knowledge of:

  • The behavior patterns of at-risk youth and methods of modifying behavior and motivating youth towards their goals.
  • Tools to assess level of independence of youth/sensory processing issues.
  • Community Resources to aid youth in independent functioning.
  • Sensory Integration and sensory processing disorder.

The Skills and Ability to:

  • Be self-motivated and manage time and multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.

  • Relate to youth and gain their respect and confidence.
  • Assess the needs and strengths of individual clients.
  • Cultivate community resources that assist the clients with independent living skills.
