As part of the group treatment team, a Residential Midnight Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the Residential Village program for the assigned shift; handling crisis situations; conducting continuous checks of the campus and all operational cottages to ensure a safe environment for youth residents; supervising and working with Youth Specialists through coaching and training to develop their skills; ensuring proper staff coverage for current and upcoming shifts.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

To be successful, a Residential Midnight Shift Supervisor must be able to do the following always:

  • Oversee and manage the Residential Village to ensure a safe environment for the residents; respond to and handle all crisis situations or critical incidents on assigned shift.
  • Supervise assigned staff and volunteers to ensure that they are functioning within the requirements of their job duties; provide guidance, training, assistance, and support to staff when needed, including planning staffing and adjusting workloads as necessary; addressing and resolving complaints to create a climate of teamwork and motivation; perform the duties of a Youth Specialist as needed.
  • Work with the other supervisors and program management regarding cottage or program licensing/certification rules, re-licensing, complaints, and rulings to ensure ongoing compliance with all agency, licensing, contractual, and legal obligations and requirements.
  • Assist the group treatment team as necessary to help ensure each child successfully completes the goals set forth in their treatment plan.
  • Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook, program’s Operations Manual, and DHS Policies and Procedures.

Basic Competencies

Education and Experience:

1. A supervisor of direct care workers shall have one of the following:

(a) A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 2 years of work experience in a child caring institution.
(b) Two years of college from an accredited college or university and 3 years of work experience in a child caring institution.
(c) A high school diploma and 4 years of work experience in a child caring institution.

2. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a child caring institution working with serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk youth between the ages of 7 - 17, experience as a supervisor in a residential program preferred.

The Knowledge of:

  • Computer and software applications (Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • The behavior patterns of youth and methods of modifying behavior.
  • Group dynamics and sensitivity to individual members of the group.

The Skills and Ability to:

  • Demonstrate leadership.
  • Motivate, develop, and direct people as they work, identify the best people for the job.
  • Manage time and multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Relate to youth and gain their respect and confidence.
  • Perform behavior management techniques to control aggressive behavior.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
  • Attend training and maintain necessary certifications and licenses.
  • Maintain a Michigan driver’s license and driving record that allows the operation of an agency or personal vehicle for agency business or to transport clients as needed.

Driving Requirements

Driving a motorized vehicle is an essential function of this position. Successful applicants must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Methodist Children’s Home Society will review driving records of candidates as part of the interviewing phase of the selection process.
